The same had happened to me last year, I was laid off from my work and was staying at home for about 6 months. This period indeed was on of the best in my life. I managed to find the common language with my teenage children, began to “notice” the things around me and simply have a little bit more opportunities to rest.

Hi Elizabeth,

I would simply put, “seasonal”.

That is what I do. It eliminates all questions because the answer is right there.

Our company typically lays off seasonal hires (and sometimes full time employees) when work is slow. If an employee is laid off, do they put on their resume that their job has ended or that their date of employment is from the start date-present. They could be hired back when work picks up again, then have the same thing happen again. Many employees go through this and I would like to know how to answer their questions on how they should put this on their resume.

In case you find yourself out of work again for an extended period of time, you can try applying for free government state grants, that are basically free money from the government to those who demonstrate genuine need. Not everyone saves up for a rainy day, so this might be just the temporary silver lining you need

I’ve heard similar stories from friends who were laid off. Somehow they found a better job or started their own business. One friend moved half way across the country to take a job only to be laid off right away. Well he ended up buying a little machine shop business with 2 employees. Nine years later he has about 60 employees and his business is doing about 8 million a year in sales.

Great post. I wasn’t laid off but instead chose to leave the workforce willingly to make a change. Many of the tactics you used were also useful for me (although since I left voluntarily unemployment was not one)

And my result (which was the goal) is the same…work I enjoy more along with much more time for other priorities in my life.
