AMEN! As a member of a national Greek fraternity, it is the gift that keeps on giving. I have made key business moves with other members of Greek organizations other than my own. There is great connection that lasts.

Liza,

I hear you (re: keeping up with FB). There are so many different social media outlets now that it can be hard trying to figure out which ones to concentrate on.

Pinterest is new and "hot" so we decided to check it out and see what it could do for the job seeker.

Thanks for the comment!

The number of tools job seekers can use nowadays is amazing. While we wouldn't specifically recruit using Pintrest, we do look at linkedin profiles and google references to head-hunt, so anything that helps with online branding in a positive way can help. Personally I have enough trouble keeping up with Facebook ;-)

Hi Mikael, reading books to learn more is a great way to stay up to date. I would not list these on the resume, as it can take up precious space. However, I may mention one or two books and what you learned from them in a cover letter. I would also work them into the conversation as appropriate during an interview.

I think you're right that showing you're able and willing to keep learning new things is a very important key. I have a question though...

If you're not attending seminars but instead like reading books to learn more. Would you list these as well of will that seem too much?

Thanks,
Mikael

Shefali- You can talk about the gap in the resume as a time when you took your personal sabbatical to take on professional development. Might as well embrace it and put it where a job would be. You can use it as a job title even.

Hope this helps!

If I have had 2 gaps ..one being 6 months or so and another after a layoff of a year.
how would i present that in my resume? in the midst of it, i took training both times and opened up my own company...

do i put the the training in the end of the resume and combine it with education? then it wont be chronological....or do i split up all my education and training and put it in chrono order?

Good luck Priscilla with following your dreams. If you want to work in the field of languages, then you can make this happen. I have noticed a lot of freelance work on Elance involving translating and proofreading if you need a start somewhere

Thanks for the advises. I am already preparing my own resume in order to find a new job in my own career. I have my BA in Languages, Translator. I have been working almost 4 years in childcare and babysitting jobs. The job I have currently is great, yet I am done with it and my contract will be finishing soon. My passion is languages focusing in translating, editing and proofreading. Thanks goodness I have been able to do some part time and freelance jobs with my own career, but honestly, I want to follow my own dreams too.

From my experience in HR, tweaking your CV for the specific job is absolutely vital. If you send the same CV out to every job, then you are likely to end up getting no response back at all. Employers want to see that you are highlighting the exact skills and experience for the job on offer
